Hindrance to Backyard Grape Growing

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Are you one of those home gardeners that don’t know the three
stumbling blocks to successfully growing grapes in your backyard?
Don’t be concern, you’re not alone.

I am growing grapes at home successfully under the worst of conditions
since 1975 and I can tell you that the usual problems gardeners
ncounter are because they don’t have any idea about the nature of the
plant that they are growing. So let’s focus at the problems that I
see when people, like you, have me come and interpret what problems
they are growing backyard grapevine.

The first problem I see is that gardeners want to grow grapes but they are unaware of the variety they are growing and
its growth habit. This leads to many difficulties from the get go.
Each variety has to be treated as an individual. The most usual
varieties in local nurseries are either Concord types or the
European vinifera grape. It all depends on whether you live East
or West. In the East, Concord types are common.
In the West, especially along the Pacific Coast, you will find
the vinifera types. Each distinct type have differing growth
habits and this influences what you will have to do to sustain
them.

Growing concord grapes have a more drooping habit of growth. Vinifera
types are more upward in their growth habit. What does this
mean? It means that each type has to be trained differently
because they grow in another way. Because the Concord types droop,
they must be directed high and allowed to droop downward during
the developing season. The vinifera types must be trained low and
allowed to grow upward. This takes advantage of the natural
growth habit and maximizes the sunlight into the leaves to get
the best ripening conditions and yield of grapes.  Good luck

The Science of Growing Grapes

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Grapes are a delicate fruit which need devotion and dedicated care. Once you have decided that growing grapes at home is something you are interested in you will soon find that this in an intricate and challenging task. Challenging, but not without fantastic rewards!

Environmental factors play a very important part in your grape vines healthy growth.

You will need to take into consideration things like

~climate; consider heavy rain falls, strong winds or frost? You will need to protect your grapes against these sorts of things. For example; you would counter the effects of heavy rainfall, which would wash your topsoil away.  Plants grapes on a slight slope which would allow the water to run easily away without building up and washing too much of the top soil away.
You would protect your grapes from strong winds by building a barrier around them that breaks the force of the wind as it passes by. Barricade could be trees or bushes.

~Soil: what characteristic of soil do you have on your land? Is it mostly clay? Rock? Sand? Grapes need to be able to hold enough water near their roots without drowning them, so the right kind and amount of soil is very important.

~Heat: Consider if the portion of land that you have selected get enough sunlight? With enough sunlight, grapes grow stronger and healthier but could burn if there is too much. You have to build canopies to protect your grapes from sunburn but still allow them to have as much sunlight as possible.

Pruning your vines is very important and pruning is the key for the fruit to grow faster and tastier ~ Preventing the leaves and stalks from taking all the nutrients that the soil gives the fruit and allowing the grapes to suck it up themselves.

There is much to learn about this delicate art, but once you understand the balance of growing grapes in a healthy environment the rewards are endlessly delightful. Like a chance to turn your grapes into wine!

Gardening and other vigorous activities promote wellness and normal blood flow in your body, so if you’re a senior or a stay at home, home grape growing is a worthwhile hobby. And of course, if your grape vine thrives and is healthy, you can enjoy grapes for free and sometimes sell your surplus harvest to the nearest local market. Here are some grape growing tips that is effective.

The first fact that you have to know is that there are certain grape species that can only thrive in certain climates that are appropriate for growing that kind of grape species. You may want to plant Chardonnay and Riesling grapes and dream of producing white wine, but if live in Florida, that would be impossible. Riesling and Chardonnay are species under Vitis Vinifera, a grape varieties which requires a long hot season and mild winter. It is only in Luxembourg and Canada you can find Auxerrois ( a grape variety that produces a fruity taste). Barbera, which has a tarry flavor, can only be grown in Italy and California. There are places that are dedicated just to giving you detailed descriptions of grape species for growing grapes effectively.

Before getting started, you should know that growing grapes is also like taking care of an infant. Grapes need plenty of sunlight and lots of care. After choosing the type of grapes, check the site and location of your yard whether it has ample sunlight for growing grapes. If there is not suffcient sunlight, it will make your vines sickly. Sunlight is still one of the natural fighters of fungi and other viruses that will attack your grape vines. Check for taller building structures that may block sunlight from coming in your yard. Grapes grown with adequate sunlight are much juicier and better tasting then those grown in dark areas.
