Starting a grape vines entails a simple yet careful planning and process. Vineyards are not only cultivated to bear grape fruits grown largely for making wines; but also are cultivated to produce table grapes, raisins and other non-alcoholic grape fruit drink. The science, study, and practice of growing grape vineyard are named as viticulture. A grape vineyard is commonly characterized through its terror. This is a French word translated as “ a sense of place”, which points to specific geological and geographical attributes of grape vineyards plantations that may be yielded in wines. Selecting the location of your grape vineyard is undoubtedly the most shaping factor in the achievement of your endeavor. You should remember that not all variety of growing wine grapes will be successful at any sites. There are specific varieties of grapes that thrive on particular soil conditions and climate. Slopes facing the south may extend the growing season while slopes facing the north curtail the growing season. Factors and some degrees like soil, fauna, flora, climate and sunlight all play considerable roles in the growth of grapes. Even with advance technology applied in most wineries does not necessarily ensure fine wine. Great wines begin with right vineyard. Your vineyard requires adequate amount of sunlight is needed to bear fruits. The vineyard will definitely grow well in areas that are shaded yet sunlight becomes the catalyst for vines that are fruit bearing. Shade tends to hinder the ability of the wine grape vines to flower buds and for its flowering buds to just drop on the ground. Nearby trees also give bothersome shade together with several hosts of problems. Raccoons, rabbits, rodents, deer and birds all cause a threat to grape vineyards. Surrounding trees also rob the soil needed for moisture. Aside from that, they might bring harmful insects and diseases.

It is only during a newly planted vine’s first couple of years while it it becoming established that regular fertilization is needed to promote growth and strength. After that only moderate feeding is helpful as too much fertilizer will promote lots of wood and greenery at the expense of fruit. This is exactly the opposite of what you want.

In growing  grape vines, how much you need to water your grapevines will depend on several factors. Your areas natural climate, i.e. The frequency of rain you get and how much hot dry weather. Soil condition too will play a part. If the soil contains a lot of clay water will tend to stay in the ground soaking the roots whereas light sandy soil will drain faster. Prepare your soil to its optimum benefit before planting grapes.

Everyone will have a different opinion on the best way to prune grapes during their dormant period. Others will strongly recommend heavy cutting back to promote vigorous new growth while other keenly advocate only light trimming. How you tend your grapevines will depend on the variety with some types requiring more pruning than others. Gather information about your vine’s variety and take appropriate action.

Wildlife intrusion and particularly birds raiding your developing fruit are nuisances you should address in growing grape vines. But even more than tha, you have to be always vigilant against grape diseases which can strike at any time. Being lapse about grapevine disease can cost you not only a crop but your entire vineyard if it gets out of control.

Any kind of discoloration, white, furry deposits about the plant, lesions or general fall in plant grapes needs to be viewed with extreme suspicion and cause concern for your grapes health. If you found something unusual, take action as soon as possible to avoid disease taking a serious hold or spreading to other plants. Adequate suitable specialist sprays and treatments are available as soon as you identify the problem.

Looking after grape vines is really a matter of good routine. Once it is established your grape vine plants should thrive and you will be rewarded with an abundance of tasty grapes.

Contrary to popular speculation or belief, growing grapes in your backyard is not as difficult as one may presume. When someone mentions the idea of starting a grape garden, one may immediately assume that you need to have acres of free land at your disposal, it will be almost impossible to be successful. This is absolutely NOT true!

As a matter of fact, there are many amateur grape growers today who are content with their small grape vines in their backyard. The grapes they produce are excellent for eating and making wine and the little effort put into it has a high return.

As a full time grape farmer, I have learned the secrets of what it takes to grow the best tasting grapes for decades. As a child I would work with my father on his farm planting and grapevine pruning all day long and continued working with him as a teenager and even now as an adult and family man. I want to teach you how to grow grapes and unveil with you the secrets of keeping a successful grapevine garden so that you too can enjoy what these delicious fruits have to offer.

First of all backyard grape growing does not need expensive fertilizers or manures. You can get some really good vines from ordinary soil. Another goodie is that you won’t have to invest a lot of time in your garden because the roots themselves will seek out what they need. The things you need to concern yourself is how to grow grape vines and where to put the vines.

It really is quite amazing how no matter where you plant your vines, all you have to do is train the vines around your house towards the well sun lit areas. If you have an open garden where the sun hits all day long, then that will work even better.

Grapes are a delicate fruit which need devotion and dedicated care. Once you have decided that growing grapes at home is something you are interested in you will soon find that this in an intricate and challenging task. Challenging, but not without fantastic rewards!

Environmental factors play a very important part in your grape vines healthy growth.

You will need to take into consideration things like

~climate; consider heavy rain falls, strong winds or frost? You will need to protect your grapes against these sorts of things. For example; you would counter the effects of heavy rainfall, which would wash your topsoil away.  Plants grapes on a slight slope which would allow the water to run easily away without building up and washing too much of the top soil away.
You would protect your grapes from strong winds by building a barrier around them that breaks the force of the wind as it passes by. Barricade could be trees or bushes.

~Soil: what characteristic of soil do you have on your land? Is it mostly clay? Rock? Sand? Grapes need to be able to hold enough water near their roots without drowning them, so the right kind and amount of soil is very important.

~Heat: Consider if the portion of land that you have selected get enough sunlight? With enough sunlight, grapes grow stronger and healthier but could burn if there is too much. You have to build canopies to protect your grapes from sunburn but still allow them to have as much sunlight as possible.

Pruning your vines is very important and pruning is the key for the fruit to grow faster and tastier ~ Preventing the leaves and stalks from taking all the nutrients that the soil gives the fruit and allowing the grapes to suck it up themselves.

There is much to learn about this delicate art, but once you understand the balance of growing grapes in a healthy environment the rewards are endlessly delightful. Like a chance to turn your grapes into wine!
