A strong earthquake hit Okinawa at 5:31 AM local time on Saturday. Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for Okinawa Island and an advisory for neighboring islands. But the warning and the advisory were both lifted at 7:00 AM local time. The agency says that tsunami of up to 10 centimeters were observed in some coastal areas of Okinawa Island. The earthquake had an intensity of 5 on the Japanese scale from 0 to 7 in Itoman, Okinawa, and an intensity of 4 in several other cities on the island. The Meteorological Agency says the focus was near the main island of Okinawa at a depth of 10 kilometers with a magnitude of 6.9.

A massive earthquake with an initial magnitude of 8.8 has struck of the coast of Chile. tinyurl.com The quake struck at 0634 GMT (3:34 am local time) about 91km (56 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 317km south-west of the capital, Santiago. Buildings in Santiago were reported to have shaken for between 10 and 30 seconds, with the loss of electricity and communications. The US issued an initial tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador. That was later extended to Colombia, Antarctica, Panama and Costa Rica.
